O-Space

Here is my O-Space Portfolio which features the major projects from my sophomore year with a few from the first semester of junior year sprinkled in.

Note that the first page just leads you back to here!

the progress of Chinaski

Here is the first revision of my type specimen poster. The main critique was that the grittiness of Bukowski was missing from the two previous iterations.

I couldn't agree more.

While I know that my work typically has a cleanliness to it and I certainly err on the side of refined -- I am edging to make myself...a little less 'yes-please-and-thank-you'.

(Although I did spend around 3 hours today adjusting my type book so that everything was properly italicized and all em and en dashes were in correct usage -- and yes, I liked it.)

Some have encouraged me to make ugly things.

This is a hard thing to swallow, so I'll continue my ode to an ugly man.

Here's to you Bukowksi, you ugly son of a bitch -- a nice little poster, in your honor.

Chinaski

I've named my first typeface after Charles Bukowski's alter ego, Henry "Hank" Chinaski. The specimen poster is inspired by the Post Office cover which is Bukowski's first novel, semi-autobiographical, and also featuring Chinaski of course. Since the typeface is inspired by traditional hand writing it seemed appropriate to give a nod to a more traditional form of communication - writing and sending letters. The typeface was created in FontLab. Here are the first iterations...it is my pleasure to introduce you to Chinaski.

OBSCURA storyboards

Comm Studio has brought us into the realm of motion. We have created an organization which would have hosted our film festival we curated. I am still working out all of the specifics of my organization, but it has begun with inspiration from the macabre, necromance, and a penchant for the beauty in the darker side of things. I've explored the ideas of subverting expectation, the relation between exterior/interior, and collection.
These are a couple initial storyboards for some stop-motion animation. The end piece will probably look nothing like these...

Opportunity Fair

This here is for the upcoming Comm Arts Opportunity Fair. OTIS AIGA is helping out, and I designed this little poster to advertise.

Opportunity = grass being greener on the other side?

Matters of Manipulation posters

Here are the latest iterations for my film festival, Matters of Manipulation. We're briefly taking a break from this project with the intention of returning later in the semester. I think it will be good to have some time apart, and our new project is looking rather exciting. I constructed all of the hearts myself; one of screws wired together, one with sashimi octopus sliced with my x-acto, and the last with matches stabbed through foam core.

Series, Series Series! [sketches]

I am currently working on a film festival poster series...and honestly it's so early in the process that the finals could possibly look nothing like this.

However, being a fan of process and wanting to be more active in my
posting has prompted me to post sketches and mini-compositions along the way.

These first two are sketches for the film The Shape of Things written and directed by the amazing Neil LaBute.

The other two films to be included are Oldboy and Santa Sangre. The theme of the festival? Love stories soaked in deception and wicked twists.
